Different kinds of weapons will become available including nukes. Along with the potential downfalls of losing resources in the area, making what we might call "evil" choices will lead players down a different path. But, judging by my own play style, this isn't always the way things go, especially if you decide to be ruthless in your choices in battle. It behooves players to keep their cities running in tip top shape.

That means any damage you do to the city will reduce its value to you after you've taken it or after you've defended it. In the campaign, cities can't be repaired.

While attacking or defending in the campaign mode of the game, players will have to worry about how they conduct themselves in battle for a couple of very important reasons. Once a unit has been chosen to be part of an attack force invading an enemy territory, they can't be used to defend a different territory later in the turn. Because this is a turn based game both inside the smaller territories and in overland maps, attackers will have to be careful about which units they take to fight. Once you attack (or have been attacked), each side of the battle must choose which of their units they'll be taking into the battle zone with them. Overall, 73 different units of different types can be purchased for use in pounding your enemies into dust. The units actually come from an overall pool, so no matter where you attack or defend, you'll be pulling from the same number of units. Each of the units in your army will have to be bought at some point, adding to your army. Building up the economy is an important aspect of the game. Each territory (many make up each faction's control) comes with some military and economic advantages as well so going after certain targets first may make another target easier in the future. These newly formed countries waste no time in attacking each other outright and that's when the game begins. YES NO When starting a campaign game (there's skirmish and multiplayer as well), players will have to pick from one of the new broken off factions of the former US. Actually destroying city parts and landmarks will indeed make a difference to the game however, but I'll get into that more in a second. And everything in the game can be destroyed, whether it's normal buildings or landmarks. So San Francisco has the Golden Gate Bridge and Chicago has the Sears Tower. The better thing is, all of the big cities are modeled to look at least vaguely like their real world counterparts thanks in part to the inclusion of national landmarks. This in itself should be pretty fun, simply because it is a chance to fight on modern day (well, very near future day) American soil. Providing a nice backdrop visually for the experience is the United States, a theater that isn't often used for war games, especially in the very near future. Not only is the game simplified in terms of interface, allowing for those that aren't grognards to play the game, but also is about a thousand times more interesting from a visual standpoint, something that war games have been struggling with for years. They're hoping that Shattered Union brings more people into the turn based strategy market and it could possibly do that given the right amount of exposure. They're riding a lot on the idea behind this game. What we saw of the game looks pretty darn good, so we've got a lot of hope for the final, especially considering PopTop's track record. Meanwhile, in the background, Russia is secretly trying to move across to take Alaska in the confusion. It challenges players to pick one of the newly formed territories in what used to be the United States in order to re-unify the country. It's a traditional turn based strategy game along the lines of an Advance Wars type of experience.

What would happen if the central government collapsed… say because of a nuclear bomb destroying Washington D.C.? PopTop, makers of Tropico and Railroad Tycoon III, attempt to answer that kind of question with their new strategy title Shattered Union for the PC and Xbox. One such possibility is the dissolution of the United States. One of the most interesting questions in fiction is "what if?" That simple beginning can lead into an infinite number of possibilities.
